課程概述

Objective and Content:
Sophomore English Composition is a course primarily in English rhetoric designed to follow on the foundation built in Freshman English Composition. Therefore, it aims at promoting your rhetoric awareness and effectiveness on the premise that writing is a process that involves students in the efforts of making deliberate and recursive decisions in planning, drafting, and revising.
You are first familiarized with foundational techniques of determining a proper subject, establishing a stance, formulating a thesis, developing an outline, and producing on that basis a connected sequence of paragraphs to form an essay. You next learn and practice the fundamental strategies of English rhetoric, such as illustration, description, and narration.
Classroom Activities and Homework:
In the class meetings, you are asked to study and discuss various topics of the writing process with paragraphs and essays as examples. You will be divided into groups to collaborate with peers in learning the writing skills through the discussion of exemplary papers. Although this course does not offer a systematic review of English grammar, you are required to do the grammar applications on our Ceiba website to help you write clearly and incisively. Most importantly, you are to write and revise eight essays in the whole semester.
